As communities continue to be dominated by America's car culture, how can we break this endless cycle of building more highways?
Meeting Scheduled for December 10, 2023 12:00 am CT
As communities continue to be dominated by America's car culture, how can we break this endless cycle of building more highways? Lack of public transit in rural and urban communities increases inequities in housing, employment and access to medical care. Living in asphalt wastelands increases flooding and makes walking and biking unsafe and unpleasant. Highway construction has divided and adversely impacted communities of color. Differently abled citizens are forced to wait for assistance at busy intersections. Hear about how re-imagined mass transit can make our communities safer and more welcoming. ________________________________________ Speakers and Topics: Daniel Romano -- Moderator C Leigh McInnis, Jackson, Mississippi Review of research study "Cars and Jails" John Courtney -- Recently Retired President, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 265 John Buis and Jerome Bauer -- "Practical Trolleys for St. Louis" Update on Houston's Effort to Stop I-45 Expansion -- Neal Ehardt (video)
